About Anxiety Disorders
Throughout your life self-limiting bouts of anxiety are normal. Roller coaster rides, interviewing for a new job, or making a significant life change are a few examples that can attribute to anxiety. However, what if anxiety and panic start to interfere with living your life? When panic or anxiety escalates into “attacks” or when anxiety or panic interferes with your day to day life, you may have a disorder. Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and various other phobia related disorders. A characteristic found within all forms of anxiety disorders includes an excessive or irrational reaction to a particular stressor. Based on current research, risks for developing an anxiety disorder can be attributed to both genetic predisposition and contributing environmental factors. Anxiety and panic disorder symptoms are treated with psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of the two depending on the severity of the disorder.
