About Diabetes
With over 30 million Americans currently living with diabetes chances are you or someone you know has diabetes. Diabetes is a group of diseases that occurs when your body does not produce enough of the hormone insulin or your body does not respond to the hormone insulin as well as it should. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death due to the increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. If you are overweight, older than 45 years of age, have a relative who has diabetes, do not exercise regularly, then you are at an increased risk of developing this disease. Despite being a preventable disease, within the last 20 years adults being diagnosed with diabetes has tripled. The type of diabetes and severity will determine what medications are necessary and if life style modifications can reduce the disease severity.
