About Obesity
Obesity is a term used to describe an excess body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more. Currently, 2 out of every 5 Americans are considered obese. Interestingly, a person cannot die from obesity. However, obesity gives rise to diseases that can significantly impact your health. Obesity is not singularly a cosmetic concern as it is more a complex health condition that results in some of the most preventable diseases. Common obesity-related health complications include type 2 diabetes, certain kinds of cancer, heart disease, and stroke. Obesity causes range from behaviors such as inactivity, physical wellness, diet, and specific medication use. Also, obesity has shown a strong familial genetic component that may make you more prone to being obese. Whether you are genetically predisposed or your behaviors are leading to or causing your obesity, obesity remains a preventable disease.
