About Substance Abuse
The dictionary defines substance abuse as an “overindulgence in or dependence on an addictive substance, especially alcohol and drugs.” People abuse substances such as drugs and alcohol for varied and complicated reasons. How does a casual night out drinking with friends or taking a narcotic after an injury become overindulgence or dependence? The cause of substance abuse is unknown however learned authorities believe it to be a combination of hereditary, environmental and social factors. Current estimates state substance abuse affects 25 million Americans. Early recognition of drug or alcohol addiction increases chances for successful treatment. Early signs that you or someone you know may be afflicted with substance abuse include using a substance on a daily basis, failed attempts to stop using the substance, requiring more and more of the substance, and/or withdrawal symptoms such as trembling, sweating, hallucinations, or high blood pressure.
