About Suicide
Suicide is the second leading cause of death between the ages of 10 to 34, and the fourth leading cause of death between the ages of 35 to 54. Suicide is death caused by self-directed injurious behavior where the person intends to die as a result of the self-inflicted injury. Suicide is a mental health crisis that has continued to rise over the past several decades. Suicide is not a disease but a result of some underlying issue, cause, or disease. Risk factors for suicide include a family history of suicide or suicide attempts, alcohol or drug problems, and depression or other mental conditions. Often, suicidal people do not seek help, so friends or family who suspect something is wrong should seek help on that person’s behalf.
