As we age, we lose the fat in our face, especially around our eyes, cheeks, and temples. Fat loss usually begins in our 30s. It becomes more prevalent in our 40s and 50s, and worsens as we grow older. The loss of fat in the face as we age leads to jowls, wrinkles, and sagging skin. To lessen the signs of aging, then, a plastic surgeon must restore the fat in the fat compartments that have been lost, as well as refresh the eyes and brow, and lift the deep layers along the cheek, neck, and jowls. This is called total facial rejuvenation.
How to know if facial rejuvenation is right for you?
When deciding whether facial rejuvenation is right for you, I recommend the “mirror test.” Simply stand in front of a mirror and ask yourself these questions:
- Are your brows and eyelids droopy?
- Are your cheeks hollow or sagging, or both?
- Do you have jowls?
- Is your neck full and sagging?
- Do you have lines?
- Are your earlobes long, saggy, or deflated?
- Is your nose drooping?
- Are your lips deflated? Sagging? Full of wrinkles? Do you have laugh lines?
If you answer “yes” to any of the above questions, especially if you answer “yes” to three or more, facial rejuvenation may be right for you.
What is facial rejuvenation?
Facial rejuvenation is the improving of your eyes, face, and neck through plastic surgery. It usually begins with eye surgery to refresh your eyes, perhaps by correcting baggy eyelids or restoring the skin across your brow, and is then preceded by a combination of a Lift and Fill Face and Necklift.
In the past, when plastic surgeons did not understand the role of fat loss in aging, most people opted to have only a face lift, which lead to unnatural looking results! Now, however, we address the loss of fat through fat transfers along with a LIFT and FILL facelift. This refreshes, reshapes, and rejuvenates your face, leaving you with a natural, youthful appearance that can last up to ten years or more.
What facial rejuvenation is not.
True facial rejuvenation surgery will improve your appearance, restoring your youthful but natural look. It will not make you look like someone else! A good plastic surgeon will focus on restoring a natural look, not an unnatural windswept look. Facial rejuvenation can take off about ten to fifteen years of aging, but it won’t restore a sixty-year-old’s face to her twenty-year-old look.
