Just about everyone dreads that day when she looks into the mirror to see crows feet spreading out from her eyes, wrinkles around her lips, and sags along her jowls. But aging is a part of life, and sooner or later, we all come upon it. Luckily, you can still do a lot to prevent or slow down the process of aging.
These days, there is a lot of misinformation floating around the Internet about aging and how to correct it. It’s hard to sort through what’s true and what’s opportunistic. Here’s a scientific look at aging and a few ways to naturally correct it. Remember that Dr. Google, in spite of being available 24/7 for any medical advice, is not a real MD and therefore often wrong. That’s why I’m here to help you!!
Understanding the science of aging.
When we age, we lose fat in our face, especially around our eyes, cheeks, and temples. This starts in our 30s, becomes more apparent in our 40s and 50s, and continues as we grow ever older. The loss of fat in the face is what leads to loss of central facial volume which makes for deep jowls, wrinkles beneath the eyes, and sagging skin along the cheek and jaw lines.
The five aspects of good skin care.
While a good skin care routine won’t eradicate the signs of aging, it’s a foundational element of maintaining healthy skin and preventing premature aging. What is a good skin care routine? If you follow these five elements, you’re doing great!
- Wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays and avoid direct sun at all costs.
- Apply moisturizer several times a day to hydrate your skin.
- Use a gentle alcohol-free cleanser to remove impurities at night.
- Use an anti-aging Vitamin A like Retin-A or a retinol regularly to restore and rejuvenate your skin.
- Refrain from smoking, maintain a healthy diet, and exercise regularly to keep your skin cells healthy.
Remember: the earlier you start a good LIFELONG skin care routine like this the better! I recommend this routine to teenagers, as well as adults.
When to see a plastic surgeon — Fillers vs. a Facelift!
As the signs of aging become more prevalent and fillers no longer work, like when you have deep facial wrinkles, facial skin sagging, and jowls along your jaw line, you may opt to have a surgical procedure called a Lift and Fill Facelift which I developed to naturally correct the signs of aging and retain your youthful look.
Facial fillers work in the early signs of facial aging to fill the cheeks and lips before you get a lot of sagging, but when you begin to see sagging facial skin with cheek jowls and neck sagging — it is time for the Lift and FIll Facelift.
Face lifts raise sagging skin around the jowls, cheeks, and forehead. The key with all of these procedures is not to overdo it and to have it done by a board certified plastic surgeon with the expertise and experience to do it well and who understands how the human face ages! You don’t want to look like a windswept Hollywood star, with overdone cheeks and lips that make you look like a chipmunk. You want to look natural and beautiful — like yourself. Remember, as an expert in facial aging and facial cosmetic surgery, I am in the “face protection not witness protection program” for you!
The most important consideration when going in for facial plastic surgery is how and who you select as your surgeon. That is the key to obtaining both the best and safest results. Therefore, make sure you have a true board certified plastic surgeon who is a real expert in facial cosmetic surgery and has the 3 E’s — experience, expertise, and exceptional results to show you. If you want plastic surgery to reduce the signs of aging in a natural youthful manner, make sure you go with a board certified plastic surgeon with experience, scientific knowledge, and prudence to sculpt your face.
