The Rising Trend of Male Plastic Surgery

With more and more men becoming more body conscious it is no surprise that the rise of plastic surgery amongst men has increased by almost fifty-percent over the past fifteen years. According to a recent survey by the  American Society of Plastic Surgeons,  male plastic surgery accounted for thirteen percent of all plastic surgery procedures. In the social media age that we live in image can be an important factor in finding a date, getting the job, or even making new friends. With more men are undergoing plastic surgery to keep their youthful appearance or change what they do not like about their body. The top four plastic surgery procedures performed on men, listed from most common to least common, include rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, breast reduction, and liposuction.

Rhinoplasty

Surgical rhinoplasty is one of many options available within the realm of plastic surgery that can have a profound impact on the male face. Common reasons men seek rhinoplasty is to improve their profile, alter or reshape the nasal bridge (removing the bump), or resize the overall shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty is an art of millimeters. Male rhinoplasty is a specialty amongst plastic surgeons as it is important to blend the patient’s desired result while maintaining the masculinity of the nasal structure.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty also known as eyelid surgery is necessary for patients who want to restore the youthful appearance of their eyes when they have loose or sagging skin. Eyelid surgery involves making small incisions following the natural lines of your upper eyelid creases and just below the lashes on the lower lids. Then excess skin, fat, or muscle are removed before skillfully suturing the skin back together. Sometimes blepharoplasty is not enough to achieve the desired result, and a brow lift must be done in tandem.

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia or male breast reduction is common amongst men and a common cause of male insecurity. ( seen in up to 20% of males!) Overdevelopment of the breast tissue due to hormonal imbalances or weight gain affects an estimated forty- to sixty-percent of men, effectively giving men breasts. Male breast reduction aims to remove excess glandular tissue and fat to give the male a more masculine, firmer, and more defined chest.  We now have the technology to remove the enlarged breast tissue with Ultrasound Liposuction with a small stab incision only in most patients.

Liposuction

Liposuction is the surgical removal of fat cells throughout the body. The two most common areas for liposuction amongst men Is the lower abdomen and the flanks (love handles). More and more men are seeking liposuction to trim down their waistline when diet and exercise have not been enough. It is important to realize liposuction is for body contouring and will help give your abdomen a slimmer, firmer, and more toned appearance. However, liposuction is not a weight-loss technique and is not a replacement for diet and exercise.

If you are a man or know a man deciding whether to undergo plastic surgery, it is always best to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your individual goals and the treatment options available to you. Not all physicians are created or trained equally: this is an essential consideration when looking for a plastic surgeon. How do you choose a plastic surgeon? Regardless of what type of procedure you want to have done, I always recommend finding an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon who is an expert in the field of surgery that you desire and who can show you proof of consistent exceptional results.
