CURE Media Group has introduced a video discussion series on topics of concern to prostate cancer patients, including cardiovascular risk management and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT).
Called “ADT in Prostate Cancer: Managing Cardiovascular Risk,” the nine-episode series features Andy Rochester, a prostate cancer survivor, discussing his experiences with Susan F. Slovin, an oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a member of his care team.
”We are thrilled to launch this video series,” Michael J. Hennessy Jr., president of MJH Associates, the parent company of CURE Media Group, said in a press release. “It is insightful to watch Rochester share his personal experience going through prostate cancer with Slovin and the audience.”
ADT, a form of hormone therapy, is a treatment option for prostate cancer patients. It reduces the levels of male hormones — androgens — to prevent them from promoting cancer cell growth. It is widely given people with advanced prostate cancer.
Some studies suggest ADT may increase a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease, but evidence can be conflicting.
During the series, Rochester and Slovin examine how multidisciplinary care affects the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer, especially as it relates to ADT and cardiovascular risk.
In the first episode, Rochester and Slovin discuss his initial diagnosis and the role of his multidisciplinary team in deciding treatment. Another segment examines the treatment decision process for metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, and how patients can prepare for therapy. Rochester, who was diagnosed with metastatic disease, was determined to be a full partner in his care.
“The part I took was basically trying to remake myself so that I could accept, also, future treatments coming my way, because I was frankly in terrible shape. So that’s when I started embarking on exercise and diet and trying to turn my own body around, because I knew there was a lot of work to do,” Rochester says in the episode.
In a segment on cardiovascular complications of ADT, the two discuss the importance of self care to mitigate cardiovascular problems. Another episode focuses on adverse event management in ADT, including treatment scheduling and goals.
There’s also discussion of the management of cardiovascular risk for patients on ADT therapy, and an exploration of complementary approaches to ADT. Other segments tackle exercise and supportive care, advice for newly diagnosed patients, and tips on multidisciplinary management in prostate cancer.
About 1 in every 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.
